Vanuatu Fijians Form Cheering Squad

Seventy-year old Vanuatu based- Fijian teacher Maraia Daurewa said our athletes will not be lacking support during the Pacific Mini Games. Speaking after yesterday’s church service in Port Vila, Daurewa said the Fijian community are going to come out in numbers to cheer on our athletes. “We just want our athletes to know that we will be supporting them whenever and wherever we can,” Daurewa said. She said all the Fijian people who are resided in Vanuatu have formed a cheering squad that will be at the sidelines to cheer on our athletes. Daurewa was very impressed with the variety of sporting athletes that make-up the Team Fiji contingent. These are sports like football, golf, tennis, table tennis and rugby. “I’m really impressed at the sight of young athletes representing Fiji which indicates a bright future for sports in Fiji.” Daurewa however, said the only concern is the delay in the release of the game schedules. “This has held us up in our plans but we will be there. As soon as we get to know where Fiji will be playing we will be there to cheer them on. “For most of us here this is the only chance we can get to cheer any Fijian team.” Daurewa added that are over 200 Fijians residing in Vanuatu. Vanuatu women football looks promising

Vanuatu ran out looking very confident with their side to play on Monday as the first day of the Women’s competition at the Van2017 Games kicked off. Despite good levels of fitness, both teams had to endure the heat of the sun, before wet conditions set in with the periods of rain. In the end the conditions did not affect the outcome as Vanuatu defeated the Solomon Islands 5-nil. Junane Ishmael opened the scoring for Team Vanuatu. With a penalty kick awarded, the lead was extended through a Monica Melteviel kick which wizzed past the goalie to meet a swollen net in the 26th minute of the second half giving a three point lead to the home team. Vanuatu Team Manager Julie King had earlier highlighted Monica Melteviel as a promising player to watch in this game. With the strong lead, Vanuatu coach Wu Kangshen announced a tactical change seeing mid-fielder Jane Alatoa come off, exchanging her position with Juanane Ishmael, while substitute Abock Toukawa came in as the next striker.
